Florida - 1568 - FRENCH REVENGE FOR THE SPANISH ATTACK ON FT. CAROLINE
The capture of Ft. Caroline by the Spanish and the murder of Ribault and his followers caused France and Spain to exchange tough words, but nothing officially was done. Dominique de Gourgues, a French Catholic set sail from France under the guise of joining the slave trade. Instead he sailed to Ft. Caroline, now called San Mateo by the Spanish. Surprising the garrison, he executed the Spanish soldiers left to guard the site.
